I looked carefully at the 690 versus the 790. For me, it was a completely different experience between the two: the 690 felt like a slightly bigger version of my KTM 530 EXC dirt bike: engine felt the same, sound was the same, vibration was the same, etc. One ride on the 790 and it was night and day: much smoother power delivery and ride.
The dash on the 690 is nicer but 99% chance of breaking in some way due to vibrations, mines been fixed. Brakes are nicer on the 690, as are foot pegs. It's a taller bike too, by a inch or 2 I'd say. Handling wise it feels like a heavier bike in the corners, I think it is by around 10kg but I notice it.
